{"id":3479,"date":"2022-09-06T14:25:25","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T14:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kestersearch.com\/insights-and-events\/?p=3479"},"modified":"2022-09-06T14:28:47","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T14:28:47","slug":"improving-the-onboarding-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kestersearch.com\/insights-and-events\/blog\/2022\/09\/improving-the-onboarding-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Improving the Onboarding Process"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We all know onboarding new team members is important but just how important is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistics that were compiled by Click Boarding (an onboarding software company) shows the value of a structured onboarding process:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>69% <\/strong>of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they experienced <em>great<\/em> onboarding.<\/li><li>New employees who went through a structured onboarding program were <strong>58% <\/strong>more likely to be with the organization after three years.<\/li><li>Organizations with a standard onboarding process experience <strong>50% <\/strong>greater new-hire productivity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not long ago, we posted a blog that covered tips on effective onboarding, which you can check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kestersearch.com\/insights-and-events\/blog\/2019\/06\/ksgs-tips-on-effective-onboarding\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>. Recently, we hired several new team members <em>(you can check out their bio\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kestersearch.com\/about\/team\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>), and after their onboarding, we did a deep dive into our process, made some updates, and added a few tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here a Few Ways to Improve Your Onboarding Process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Make sure the process is clearly documented.<ul><li>We have an onboarding checklist that includes \u201cwho does what and when\u201d.&nbsp;<\/li><li>When we kick off the onboarding process, it is important that the team knows what they are responsible for and the expected timelines.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Once you\u2019ve got your process documented, don\u2019t let it become stale.&nbsp;<ul><li>This should be something that evolves over time.&nbsp; Debrief with your most recent hires, as well as those involved with the training process and tweak your process based on feedback.&nbsp;<ul><li>Anonymous surveys can work well for this or it can help to have a person do the debrief that wasn\u2019t involved in the onboarding process so the new hire can feel comfortable giving honest feedback. \u201cWhat went well?\u201d\/ \u201cWhat didn\u2019t go well?\u201d \/ \u201cWhat do you wish would have been done differently?\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Make it scalable but also customizable.&nbsp;<ul><li>Don\u2019t start from scratch every time you have a new hire. We utilize templates that have been built out based on the different role types. For example, we use a general training schedule template to make sure we cover some basic training.<\/li><li>Having templates can be very helpful as a baseline, however, onboarding needs to be tweaked based on each new hire.
